This morning we started our Daily 5. Students were assigned to one of the following five activities:
1) Spelling (students complete task cards based on their individual spelling words)
2) Free write (students write stories, poems, journal entries etc)
3) Word Work (students complete tasks based on parts of speech. This week is focusing on homophones)
4) Work with teacher (students work with Ms. Binks on spelling and reading skills)
5) Reading comprehension (students read a picture book and answer questions about what they read)
We will cycle through our daily 5 and change the activities every week.
In math we reviewed the terms:
- greater than
- less than
- equal to
We discussed how when we are comparing numbers we need to ask if a number is bigger, smaller or the same as another number. We then use the symbols <, > and = to show our understandings. When comparing numbers you always start left to right and figure out the value of the digit.
For example if comparing 2345 and 6531 we start on the left and look at the digit in the thousands place. Since 2000 is smaller than 6000 we would write: 2345 < 6531
These would be great skills to practice at home. We will continue our review on comparing and ordering numbers this week.
In science this afternoon we started stations based on hearing and sound. The stations focused on how sound can travel through air, water and solids as well as these three terms: amplify, absorb, conduct.
We brainstormed definitions for these terms and came up with the following:
amplify: making the sound bigger or stronger so it easily travels
absorb: making the sound softer/quiet. The sound does not travel easily
conduct: something that helps guide sound. The sound will be louder and clearer.
We will continue to work through the stations for the rest of the week. Ms. Binks is hoping to start our soundproofing project on Thursday so please remember to bring in building materials.
Reminders:
- Tomorrow is our last day of swimming. Make sure you bring your swimsuit!
