Happy Thursday

This morning we completed a free writing activity for about 45 minutes. We were able to write about any topic we wanted (some ideas were Minecraft, our Christmas holiday, what we want to do in summer and our favourite things) or we could finish this story starter: In the middle of the night I woke up to the sound of a CRASH! I looked under my bed and saw....
Ms. Binks is collecting these pieces of writing and looking at how well we:
- use punctuation
- use our spelling words
- include descriptive or juicy words
- have our writing make sense
- print and space our words

In social studies today we continued to discuss the climate and 3 seasons of India. Today we learned about the rainy season. We learned a new word: monsoon. Monsoons are strong winds that carry in rain. Ask me how monsoons can be dangerous.

Mrs. Ball was visiting today and read us some interesting New Year's traditions from around the world. Here is some things we learned:
- At midnight on New Year's Eve, people in Brazil go to the beach
- People in Brazil often cook a dessert called rabanada which is similar to French toast
- In some French Canadian communities, people have a feast of turkey with chestnut pudding dressing
- Columbian people wear yellow underwear on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day because they believe it brings health and good fortune
- In China on the last day of the New Year, people attend a parade led by a giant dragon. The dragon symbolizes good luck and strength
- Gung Hay Fat Choy is a greeting in Cantonese

In Daily 5 we continued our work around recognizing and summarizing the main idea. Lots of us started to get excited about non-fiction books we are reading. Ask me to tell you one interesting fact or supporting detail from my non-fiction book.

Reminders:
- Gymnastics starts next week. Please look to the blog for more information on this
- Please make sure you are dressing appropriately for the weather!-9
