This morning we had our kickoff assembly for Jump Rope for Heart from the Canadian Heart and Stroke foundation. We learned about 5 ways we can keep our hearts healthy:
1) Exercise
2) Eating healthy food
3) Drinking water
4) Getting lots of sleep
5) Not smoking (this one is for adults)
Today the envelopes for the fundraising for Jump Rope for Heart were sent home. They are due back by March 17th. Students were told that if they wish to fundraise, they need to do so with parent permission and parent supervision. We talked about how you are only asking people you know. There is information on the envelopes about how to register online. Please make sure that you write your name, our school and your teacher's name (Ms. Binks) on the top of your envelope!
In health, we watched a video about how the heart works. We learned that there are 4 chambers called the right atrium, left atrium, left ventricle and right ventricle. Blood is carried to the heart through veins. Blood enters the heart through the right atrium. Then it travels through the tricuspid valve to the right ventricle. From there, it is carried through the pulmonary valve and pulmonary artery to the lungs. In the lungs it loads up on oxygen. Then the oxygenated blood travels through the pulmonary valve to the left atrium. Once there, it goes through the mitral valve into the left ventricle. Veins carry blood to the heart and arteries carry blood away from the heart.
In math today, we learned about multiplying by 9 and 10.
2 tricks for multiplying the numbers 0 - 10 by 9 are:
a) Add the digits of your answer. If you get 9, you have the right answer. For example if I find that
2 x 8 = 18 I would add the digits from my answer: 1+ 8 = 9 so I have the right answer
b) Use your fingers. Put down the finger you are multiplying 9 by. However many fingers are in front of that finger goes in the tens spot and however many fingers are behind that finger go in the ones spot. Here is a video to help explain: Using your fingers to multiply by 9
1 trick for multiplying by 10 is:
a) Add a zero behind whatever number you are multiplying by and that's your answer. For example: for 8 x 10 I would add a 0 behind my 8 to get 80. For 10 x 10 I would add a 0 behind the 10 to get 100.
Reminders:
- We have library tomorrow. Please bring back your books!
- Spelling tests on Wednesday
- Jump rope envelopes due back March 17

Marshmallow Towers
We have started art projects based around room 9's love of reading! After much discussion, we decided that we would create a giant book that you could read. Each of us are responsible for creating our own page that showcases all different items around reading. Some things that we have been adding onto our pages include:
- pictures of our favourite books
- pictures of us reading
- book covers we have re-created
- quotes from books
- words about reading
- a list of books
We are hoping to display our completed giant book somewhere in the school.
To continue our work on structures, we were given a challenge. In groups of 4, we had to create the tallest, strongest structure out of spaghetti that would hold the weight of one marshmallow. We were allowed to use 20 sticks of spaghetti, 1 meter of tape, 1 meter of string and one marshmallow. We only had 18 minutes to build. Lots of us found this challenging because the spaghetti kept breaking. The most successful structure was 36 cm tall and was shaped like a tipi. Here are some pictures of us building:
Today we had to record some observations we had during this activity, along with reflections on what we did well and what we could have improved on. We may retry this activity once we have built our knowledge on strong shapes and models in buildings.
In math we have been playing a game called Around the World where we try to be the person who answers multiplication questions the fastest. Some of us are still using fingers and counting for our 1s and 2s facts. It would be a great idea to practice facts from 0x12 all the way to 8x12.
Our new spelling words have been posted. We will be having our spelling tests next Wednesday. Make sure you practice!!
Reminders:
- Please make sure you are dressing appropriately for the weather. Lots of students came to school today in runners with no jacket, mitts or hats.

Pink Shirt Day
This morning our class completed the Accountability Pillar survey which is done by grade four students across Alberta. The survey asked us questions about our learning, teachers, peers and experience at school. We could answer the questions honestly and anonymously. Ask me about some of the questions and my thoughts on school!
In math today we continued multiplication by playing a card game. With a partner, we had to divide a deck of cards into 2 equal piles. Each person was given a pile that stayed face down. On the count of 3, each person had to flip over the top card of their pile. Then we had to multiply the numbers. We gave the cards the following values:
A = 1
2 - 10 = the same value as the number on the card
J, Q, K = 0
Whoever multiplied the numbers together correctly the fastest, got to keep that set of cards. If we tied we flipped again until someone answered first. Whoever had the most cards at the end of the game wins. This would be great game to play to practice multiplication facts and to get more confident with answering multiplication questions quickly.
In science we have started talking about structures. We discussed what the words strong and weak mean to us, along with some examples. Then we looked at 6 different structures and while working with a partner, categorized them into strong or weak. We had to explain our reasoning by using specific characteristics of the buildings. We then used this activity to help us fill out a Frayer Model on strong structures. We will be continuing our work with building and structures in the upcoming weeks.
Today was Pink Shirt Day! Thank you to those students who wore pink shirts to take a stand against bullying. To go along with this special day, we read a reader's theatre script from the story the Lion and the Mouse. It is a fable about a mouse who is almost eaten by a lion but is let go. The lion becomes trapped in a net and the mouse sets him free by eating through the rope. We talked about the moral of this story and how it is linked to kindness. We also read a story called the Kindness Quilt which is about a classroom of students who are asked to draw pictures that demonstrate kindness. One student draws numerous pictures and decides to make a quilt square out of her pictures. Soon other students add their pictures next to hers and the quilt keeps growing and growing. We decided to make our own kindness quilt. Each of us were given 2 squares of paper. On one, we had to write something kind about another student in the classroom. We drew their name out of a bin so it would be completely random. On the other square, we had to draw a picture or symbol that showed kindness. Ms. Binks will be creating a quilt on our classroom door with our squares.
Reminders:
- Fun lunch is tomorrow! If you ordered, please make sure you still bring a snack
- Many students have left items behind in the classroom, that have now been taken to the lost and found. Please make sure you check the lost and found more any missing items.

Happy long weekend!
Today we read through a reader's theatre story called Jaime's (Un)lucky Day about a boy named Jaime who baked a special cake for his girlfriend for Valentine's Day. His sister accidentally knocked over the cake and ruined it. To apologize she bought Jaime a balloon. When Jaime invited his girlfriend over she talked about how upset she was because her mom had made her a cake (it turned out being the same type Jaime had made) and she couldn't eat it because she was lactose intolerant! So the ruined cake ended up working in Jaime's favor. We all enjoyed reading out the parts of the play. In the future we will use more reader's theatre stories to practice how to read clearly, loudly and with expression.
We continued to learn multiplication strategies. Today we talked about arrays. Arrays are equal rows of shapes that can be used to show a multiplication problem. We had to create arrays based off of multiplication sentences and then write multiplication sentences based off of arrays. Ask me to show you what the array would look like for 5 x 7 = 35
Remember: the first number in the multiplication sentence is the number of rows you would have, the second number is how many shapes will be in each row and the third number is the total.
This afternoon we had our spelling tests. The spelling review for each group was sent home. Please make sure that you are practicing your words! We will have another review of 40 or 50 words in a few weeks.
Reminders:
- There is no school Thursday, Friday or Monday for students
- We have library on Tuesday
- Pillars of Care assembly is next Wednesday. Students who are winning awards will be bringing home a sheet today

Valentine's Day is tomorrow!
The past few days we have been working on beautiful art pieces using paint and pastels. We learned that the national bird of India is the peacock so we have created our own using warm and cool colors. On Friday, we worked through 3 stations. The first was to use cool colors (purple, blue and green) and paint a sheet of paper however we wanted. At the next station we used warm colors (red, yellow and orange) and painted a sheet of paper. The next station (the most fun of all) we painted our hands and made handprints to create a peacock head and neck. Then using pastels, we created large eyes. Once our paint was dry, we cut out feathers from the cool colors and circular details from the warm colors. Then we glued them around the peacock head. We added detail to the face and neck by using small brush strokes and white paint. The last step was to add a burst of color by smudging a border using cool color pastels. Here are some of the finished products....
We continued to practice our basic multiplication facts for facts up to 5 x 12. Today we did a timed practice for 5 minutes and 8 minutes. On Wednesday we will be shortening those times even more. Our first timed practice was sent home today. It would be a great idea to practice these facts to be ready for the faster time on Wednesday. We also started learning about multiplying by 7s by filling in a skip counting chart.
This afternoon we were given the challenge of building a mailbox for Valentine's Day using only one sheet of red paper, scissors and tape. We had to construct our mailbox so it had a place to fit cards and stand up off of our desks. We were able to brainstorm with someone else in the class, create a blueprint and then build. Some of us discovered how challenging working with paper can be, so we did not finish our mailboxes. Ms. Binks will give those students more time tomorrow.
We will be exchanging Valentine's Day cards in our class, however it is expected that if you are bringing cards you bring enough for every single person in the classroom. We have 22 students in the class. We ask that all candy, cupcakes, gum etc stays at home. Pencils, erasers or tattoos are ok to bring if they came with the cards. We will be doing Valentine's Day activities in the class tomorrow that involve reading, writing and math. Students were able to take home paper on Friday to create cards. We are unable to give out the names of the students in the class, so if you can't remember someone's name you can always write "to my friend"

A Visit From Officer Kovak
This morning our S4 police officer, George Kovak, came to our class to give a presentation on digital citizenship. He started off by talking about his uniform and his tool belt. He talked about how he uses some tools every day and other tools are his "just in case" tools. He showed us his radio (we actually heard a call come in!), flashlight, pepper spray (he kept it in his belt to stay safe), handcuffs and the special key for them, his baton and his gun (he kept it holstered) and extra bullets. He also talked about special tools that we all have and can use. These special tools are:
- eyesight
- sense of smell
- hands
- feet
- ears
- our mouth or voice
- our brain
- our hearts
He talked about how digital citizenship is about making responsible choices online and in the community online. We talked about the difference between real friends and online friends. Real friends are friends you have actually met in person, you have known for a long time, you trust, your parents know and you see often. Online friends are people that you have met, or who have contacted you online. When you are contacted online, you should think of a stoplight.
Red light means that you need to stop right away. This would be when you don't know someone, something is inappropriate or could be hurtful to someone. When you are on a "Red light" you should ask a trusted adult right away for help.
Yellow light means you are unsure or thinking "maybe". This could be when a friend of a friend contacts you. When you are on a yellow light you should still ask a trusted adult for help. A trusted adult can be a teacher, parent, family member or even a police officer.
A green light means that you know the person. It is a real friend or a family member. When you are on a green light it is safe for you to contact the person.
Today in math we practiced speed and accuracy with multiplication facts for 0 - 5. Ms. Binks gave us 10 minutes to work through and solve 34 questions on facts from 0-2 and then 10 more minutes to work through 34 questions on facts from 3-5. It was ok if we didn't finish the questions. It is a good way to see if we need to practice. We will redo the same questions next week with a shorter amount of time. We talked about wanting to work toward trying to solve the questions within 2 minutes. Practicing multiplication facts at home would be a great idea!
Tomorrow we will be doing an art project involving paint. Ms. Binks has asked that we wear clothing that we can easily roll up the sleeves.

Almost Done Presentations!
The past few days we have continued to work on multiplication by learning about multiplying by 6s. We learned that the answer will always be an even number. We also learned that if you multiply an even number by 6 that number will appear in the ones spot of the answer. For example 6 x 2 = 12, 6 x 4 = 24. We will continue to work on our multiplying for the next little bit.
We are almost finished our social studies presentations! The past few days we have learned about:
- Transportation in India
- Clothing in India
- Clothing, houses and celebrations of First Nations in Alberta
- Sports in India
- Music and Dance
Ask me to share some facts I learned!
The new spelling words have been posted. Please make sure you practice! The review test will be returned by Friday.

No School tomorrow
Today we continued our social studies presentations. We learned about
- Food in India
- Music and dance in India
Some interesting facts we learned were:
- A popular dish in India is curry
- Rice is included in almost every meal of the day
- Most people eat with their fingers
- Watermelon is a fruit that is eaten, especially on hot days
- Music and dance is an important way to tell stories
- Flutes, guitars and drums are frequently used instruments
We will be finishing our presentations next week.
We continued to read Mission Mumbai. Dylan and Rohit were at Rohit's cousin's engagement celebration. It was a very decadent event with lots of colors, fancy clothes and a huge buffet. We learned that Rohit cannot eat chutney because it makes him very sick. Rohit and Dylan overheard Bua bragging about how she controls her brother (Rohit's father) and will have no problem keeping Rohit in India for school. She kept saying how her opinion was more important than Rohit's mother. Rohit became so angry that he went to the buffet and chugged a bowl of chutney. Then, he went over to Bua and threw up all over her. This created chaos and anger between Rohit, Bua, Mrs. Lal and Dylan.
Reminders:

Lockdown Practice
This morning we started our social studies presentations. We went through what we thought we should be marked on as well as what Ms. Binks wanted to focus on. We decided on 4 categories:
1) content - the actual information we had in our project and how many facts we taught the audience
2) organization - if our projects were done neatly, easy to read and showed our best work
3) presentation - how we spoke during the presentation and if the audience could see and understand what we were saying
4) questions and answers - if we could ask the audience at least 3 strong questions about what they learned and if we could answer questions we were asked
Today the presentations were about:
- Food in India
- Alberta's First Nations hunting and food
- Transportation in India
- Sports in India
After each presentation we were responsible for writing 2 stars (compliments) and 1 wish (something we wished would have been included or done to make the presentation even better). We talked about how we needed to make sure our stars and wishes were kind, specific, achievable and helpful. We were also responsible for writing down things we learned from each presentation. We will continue to present until next Tuesday.
If you have an alto recorder, please remember to bring it to school! Lots of students have been phoning parents to see if they can bring the recorders. Students should keep the recorder in their backpacks so it is ready for the days we have music.
This afternoon we had our lockdown practice. Everything went very well and the police officers who helped with the practice were impressed with our behavior. Some of us chose to talk and be silly during the lockdown. We had a class discussion about how even though we may be sitting silently for a long time, it is still our responsibility to make good choices and stay quiet. Ask me how I did this afternoon.
Reminders:
- Please make sure you bring back signed report card folders
- No school on Friday for students
